| National Population Census |
| The population census will be carried out nationwide. It consists of a statistical survey to identify the number of people, households living in Japan. It has been conducted every 5 years since 1920 (Year 9 of Era Taisho) and this is the 19th edition. This year’s survey is also the first one to be carried out since Japan became a depopulating society. The result of the survey will offer a valuable source of information for the improvement of social policies in areas such as child welfare, care and medical assistance for the elderly, employment measures, regional revitalization, among others. It will also serve as an essential data basis to address the main challenges of the country and to the implementation of various policies. The census aims at identifying the number of people living in Japan, independently of nationality. Therefore, all people living in Japan are obliged to answer the questionnaire. The information will be used only for statistical purposes and not for immigration control, taxation or police file purposes. The survey aims at identifying the gender, date of birth, nationality, employment status of all members of a household, kind of household, number of members in a household, kind of dwellings, etc. Distribution of questionnaires: from late September to early October census takers will distribute census forms to all residents. From this fiscal year, submission of census forms can be hand-delivered to census takers or can be sent by post. Census takers are temporary national civil servants assigned by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications. We will appreciate your cooperation in answering the questionnaire.
